Getting ready to compete in Malmo, WEG Double-Gold Medalist Tom McCutcheon of the United States is among those from North America preparing to ship his best horses to Sweden for the competition. As is WEG Team Gold Medalist and Individual Silver Medalist Craig Schmersal also of the United States. Unlike team competitions, riders from the same nation (each country can send two athletes) will compete head-to-head for the title of Individual World Champion at this World Reining Final – an incredibly exciting twist for spectators. Each Reining pattern could be the next World Champion.
The formidable German Rudi Kronsteiner, who held on to the champion’s title for the last four years of the FEI World Reining Masters, has been nominated by Germany in order to “defend the champion title” and will likely be the mark that all the other riders will strive to achieve and outscore.
One of the riders representing Belgium is the always strong Bernard Fonck. A seasoned veteran of high-performance FEI competition, Fonck is also a force to be reckoned with at this competition, as a multiple FEI champion with his claim on many titles.
Plus, the top riders all have their eye on Canada’s Lisa Coulter, who in 2010 was the FEI World Ranking List Leading Rider, a highly prestigious title that is hard earned through consistent advanced achievement and countless major FEI titles. Coulter is likely to be very well mounted and will have her sights set on being the first woman to reach the FEI Reining champion’s podium in decades.
Somewhat new to the FEI Reining scene, Martin Muehlstaetter will compete against not only his fellow Austrian but could also be the dark horse in the competition with a long resume of achievement in the sport. Muehlstaetter represents Austria but lives and trains in the United States with much international success and was a member of the Austrian team at the WEG.
The competition is divided into two divisions: Open and Restricted, with the Open division for all athletes from all nations and the Restricted Division open to athletes from all nations with the exception of: United States, Belgium, Italy, Austria and Canada.
